A Guide to Long Vowel Sounds

Long vowel sounds are the vowel sound that has the same sound as the letter name. In simple, it sounds like the letter name.
Example: unicorn, eat, acorn, even, and so on.

In the above example, the word 'eat' starts with the long E sound. The sound of the letter E is /i/ but here you pronounce the letter as /E/ not as /i/. It sounds pretty simple but did you know that the long vowel sound follows some set of rules to spell a word?

Yes, it can be spelled in four different ways. Each of the four ways follows a certain spelling pattern. Read on the four different ways to spell Long Vowel Sound.

Four Long Vowel Patterns

The four long vowel patterns are
  • A vowel at the end of a syllable
  • Magic E/ Silent E
  • Vowel glide/ Diphthongs
  • I or O are long before 2 consonants

A vowel at the end of a syllable

The words with long vowels at the end of syllables. It means that a vowel at the end of a syllable is generally long.
example: event, defend, open, hero, bonus.

Magic E/ Silent E

The Magic E makes the previous Vowel long and the letter 'E' at the end of a word is silent.
Example: time, cane, love, game, kite.
In the above example 'time', the letter 'i' in word time is long and the end of the letter 'e'  is silent.

Vowel glide/ Diphthongs

When the two vowel combines together, it forms single sound. The diphthongs are ai, ee, ie, oa, and ue. Vowel glide is a little bit difficult and confusing because it has 2 sounds. You can learn more about diphthongs in the next chapter.
Example: deer, sheep, meet, book, look, moon, soon.

I or O are long before 2 consonants

When the letter I or O appears before two consonants, the vowel can be spelled as a long sound.
Example: both, bold, host, kind.
In the above example, in the word 'both' the letter 'o' appears before the 2 consonants 'th' so the letter 'O' is pronounced as O ( as the letter name).
